WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious or even fatal injury to the child in the event of an accident, braking or sudden change in direction:

  • always secure children less than 1.50 m tall and under 12 years of age in a special child restraint system installed on a suitable vehicle seat, as the seat belts are not designed for passengers of this size.

  • vehicles with automatic child seat recognition: only secure children under 12 years of age on the co-driver's seat if the child is secured on a child restraint system with automatic child seat recognition.

  • if you fit a child restraint system to the co-driver's seat, you must move the co-driver's seat as far back as possible.

  • do not allow a child to travel sitting on the lap of a vehicle occupant. The forces exerted in the event of an accident, sharp braking or a sudden change in direction make it impossible for a child to be held securely. The child could be thrown against the vehicle interior and be seriously or even fatally injured.

  • all vehicle occupants must always have their seat belt fastened correctly.

WARNING

If the child restraint system is incorrectly fitted on the seat position suitable for this purpose, it cannot perform its intended protective function. In the event of an accident, sharp braking or a sudden change in direction, the child may not be held securely. There is an increased risk of serious or even fatal injuries.

Observe the manufacturer's installation instructions and the correct use for the child restraint system. Make sure that the entire surface of the child restraint system is resting on the seat surface. Never place objects under or behind the child restraint system, e.g. cushions. Only use child restraint systems with the original cover designed for them. Only replace damaged covers with genuine covers.

WARNING

If the child restraint system is incorrectly secured with the seat belt, it cannot perform its intended protective function. In the event of an accident, sharp braking or a sudden change in direction, the child may not be held securely. An incorrectly fastened seat belt can cause additional injuries. There is an increased risk of serious or even fatal injuries.

Make sure that:

  • the belt is routed as the manufacturer of the child restraint system recommends

  • the seat belt is not twisted at any point

  • the seat belt does not pass across the throat, under an arm or behind the back of the child

  • the belt strap is not trapped and does not rub against any sharp edges.

WARNING

If a rearward-facing child restraint system is mounted facing forwards by mistake, it cannot provide the intended protection. This can, for example, be the case if a rearward-facing child restraint system is fitted on a rear seat which is facing backwards. The child cannot be restrained in the event of an accident, for instance. There is an increased risk of injury, possibly even fatal.

Always ensure the rear seat is facing forwards before fitting a rearward-facing child restraint system on it.

WARNING

If persons (particularly children) are exposed to heat or cold for a prolonged period, there is a risk of serious or even fatal injuries. Never leave persons (particularly children) unattended in the vehicle.

WARNING

If the child restraint system is placed in direct sunlight, the parts could become very hot. Children could be suffer burns by touching these parts, in particular on the metallic parts of the child restraint system. There is a risk of injury.

If you and your child leave the vehicle, always make sure that the child restraint system is not in direct sunlight. Cover it with a blanket, for example. If the child restraint system has been exposed to direct sunlight, leave it to cool down before securing the child in it. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.

WARNING

If the child restraint system is fitted incorrectly or is not secured, it can come loose in the event of an accident, heavy braking or a sudden change in direction. The child restraint system could be thrown about, striking vehicle occupants. There is an increased risk of injury, possibly even fatal.

Always fit child restraint systems properly, even if they are not being used. Make sure that you observe the child restraint system manufacturer's installation instructions.

WARNING

Child restraint systems or their securing systems that have been damaged or subjected to a load in an accident cannot perform their intended protective function. In the event of an accident, sharp braking or a sudden change in direction, the child may not be held securely. There is an increased risk of serious or even fatal injuries.

Immediately replace child restraint systems that have been damaged or subjected to a load in an accident. Have the child restraint securing systems checked in a qualified specialist workshop before fitting a child restraint system again.

WARNING

If you leave children unattended in the vehicle, they may be able to set the vehicle in motion if, for example, they:

  • release the parking brake

  • shift the automatic transmission out of park position P or shift manual transmission into neutral

  • start the engine

In addition, they may operate vehicle equipment and become trapped. There is a risk of an accident and injury.

When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.

WARNING

If children are travelling in the vehicle, they could:

  • open doors, thus endangering other people or road users

  • exit the vehicle and be caught by oncoming traffic

  • operate vehicle equipment and become trapped, for example

There is a risk of an accident and injury.

Always activate the child-proof locks and override feature if children are travelling in the vehicle. When leaving the vehicle, always take the key with you and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.

If a child is travelling in the vehicle:

  • activate the child-proof locks in the vehicle doors and the override feature for the electric hinged windows and the sliding sunroof in the rear compartment more.

  • secure the child using a child restraint system approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The child restraint system must be appropriate to the age, weight and size of the child. You should preferably fit the child restraint system to a suitable rear seat. Children are generally better protected there.

  • make sure that the child is strapped in before starting the journey. Securing systems for child restraint systems include the seat belt more or the ISOFIX child seat securing system more.

Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use the listed child restraint systems more. You can obtain further information about the correct child restraint system from any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Child restraint system on the co-driver's seat

WARNING

If the co-driver's airbag is not disabled:

  • a child secured in a child restraint system on the co-driver's seat could be seriously or even fatally injured by the co-driver airbag as it deploys. This is especially the case if the child is in close proximity to the co-driver's front airbag when it is deployed.

  • never secure a child in a rearward-facing child restraint system on the co-driver seat. Only secure a rearward-facing child restraint system on a suitable rear seat.

  • always move the co-driver's seat to the rearmost position if you secure a child in a forward-facing child restraint system on the co-driver's seat.

The co-driver's front airbag is not disabled:

  • in vehicles without automatic child seat recognition on the co-driver's seat

  • on vehicles with automatic child seat recognition on the co-driver's seat, unless a child restraint system with transponders for automatic child seat recognition is fitted to the co-driver's seat

  • in vehicles with automatic child seat recognition in the co-driver's seat, if the mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp is not lit

Information about recommended child restraint systems can be obtained at any Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.

Appropriate warnings are on the dashboard to draw attention to this danger.

NEVER use a rearward-facing child restraint on a seat protected by an ACTIVE AIRBAG in front of it, DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY to the CHILD can occur.

Automatic child seat recognition on the co-driver's seat

WARNING

If the mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp does not light up when a child restraint system is fitted, the co-driver's airbag is not disabled. If the co-driver's airbag then deploys, the child may be seriously or even fatally injured by it.

If the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indicator lamp does not light up, proceed as follows:

  • Never use a rearward-facing child restraint system on the co-driver's seat.

  • Fit a rearward-facing child restraint system on a suitable rear seat.

or

  • Only use a forward-facing child restraint system on the co-driver's seat. When doing so, move the co-driver's seat to its rearmost position.

  • Have the automatic child seat recognition checked at a qualified specialist workshop.

To ensure that the automatic child seat recognition on the co-driver's seat functions correctly, never place objects (e.g. a cushion) under the child restraint system. The entire base of the child restraint system must rest on the vehicle seat cushion. An incorrectly fitted child restraint system cannot perform its intended protective function in the event of an accident, and could even lead to injuries.

WARNING

Do not place electronic devices on the co-driver's seat, e.g.:

  • laptops, if switched on

  • mobile phones

  • cards with transponders, e.g. ski passes or access passes

Signals from electronic equipment can cause interference in the sensor system of the automatic child seat recognition system.

This can lead to a system malfunction and cause:

  • the mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp to light up even though a child seat with automatic child seat recognition is not fitted. As a result, the co-driver's airbag will not be deployed in the event of an accident.

  • the mbsymb2_inv_002b.png warning lamp to light up.

  • the mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp not to light up briefly when the key is turned to position 2 in the ignition lock.

The absence of automatic child seat recognition in the co-driver seat is indicated by the sticker pictured above. The sticker is affixed to the side of the dashboard on the co-driver's side. The sticker is visible when you open the co-driver's door.

The co-driver seat sensor system of the automatic for child restraint systems detects whether a special child seat with transponders for automatic child seat recognition has been fitted. In this case the mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp lights up. The co-driver's front airbag has been disabled.

If the co-driver airbag is disabled by the automatic child seat recognition, the following remain enabled on the co-driver side:

  • the thoraxbag

  • the windowbag

  • the belt tensioner

Problems with child seat recognition

Problem

A special child seat with transponders for automatic child seat recognition has been fitted to the co-driver's seat. The co-driver's airbag is therefore disabled as desired.

There is no child seat fitted to the co-driver's seat. The automatic child seat recognition system has malfunctioned.

ISOFIX child seat securing system

WARNING

ISOFIX child restraint systems do not offer sufficient protective effect for children whose weight is greater than 22 kg who are secured using the safety belt integrated in the child restraint system. The child could, for example, not be restrained correctly in the event of an accident. This poses an increased risk of injury or even fatal injury.

If the child weighs more than 22 kg, only use ISOFIX child restraint systems with which the child is also secured with the vehicle seat belt. Also secure the child restraint system with the Top Tether belt, if available.

When fitting the child restraint system in vehicles with a rear bench seat, make sure that the seat belt for the middle seat does not get trapped.

Move the backrest to the rearmost detent position.

Install the ISOFIX child restraint system. Comply with the manufacturer's instructions when installing the ISOFIX child restraint system.

Return the backrest to the foremost detent position.

ISOFIX is a standardised securing system for special child restraint systems on the rear seats. Securing rings mbsymb6_inv_003a.png for the ISOFIX child restraint systems are located between the seat cushions and the seat backrest and indicated by information tags on the seat cushions.

Before each journey, make sure that the ISOFIX child restraint system is properly engaged in both securing rings mbsymb6_inv_003a.png.

Other child restraint systems can be secured to the seats using the seat belts more. Only use child restraint systems that are appropriate for the age and size of the child and that conform to legal requirements. Make sure that you observe the child-seat manufacturer's installation instructions.

Suitable positioning of the child restraint systems

When mounting a forward-facing child restraint system on the co-driver's seat, move the co-driver's seat to the rearmost position.

Vehicles with automatic child seat recognition in the co-driver's seat: a "Universal" category child restraint system with a transponder for automatic child seat recognition must be fitted when the co-driver's airbag is disabled. The mbsymb2_inv_0032.png mbsymb2_inv_0034.png indicator lamp on the centre console must light up.
