Reversing camera

Important safety notes

../../../../global/pictures_mb/symb_ruf.png

Objects that are not at ground level appear further away than they actually are, for example:

  • the bumper of the vehicle parked behind

  • the drawbar of a trailer

  • the ball coupling of a trailer tow hitch

  • the tail-end of a lorry

  • slanted posts

Only use the camera guide lines for orientation. Do not get any closer to objects than the lowest horizontal guide line. You may otherwise damage your vehicle and/or the object.

The reversing camera is only an aid. It cannot replace your own awareness of the immediate surroundings. You are responsible for safe manoeuvring and parking. When manoeuvring and parking, make sure that there are no persons, animals or objects in the manoeuvring area.

The reversing camera may show obstacles in perspectival distortion, incorrectly or not at all. The reversing camera cannot show all objects which are very near to or under the rear bumper. It will not warn you of a collision, people or objects.

General notes

The reversing camera is located above the licence plate moulding of the tailgate more.

The reversing camera is a visual parking aid. It shows you the area behind the vehicle in the COMAND display.

The area behind the vehicle is displayed in a mirrored fashion, as in the rear-view mirror or the exterior mirrors. The guide lines displayed assist you in reversing.

The function of the reversing camera may be partially or completely impaired in the following circumstances:

  • if it is raining hard, snowing or foggy

  • if you are parked somewhere very dark

  • if the camera is exposed to very bright white light. White lines may appear on the display.

  • if the area is illuminated with fluorescent lighting. The display may flicker.

  • if the temperature changes very quickly, for example if you drive into a heated garage in the winter

  • if the ambient temperature is very high

  • if the camera lens is dirty or obstructed

  • if the rear of the vehicle is damaged. In this case, have the position and setting checked at a qualified specialist workshop.

You can find information on cleaning the camera in the "Maintenance and care" section more.

Switching the reversing camera on/off

To switch on: make sure that the key is in position 2 in the ignition lock.

Engage reverse gear.

The COMAND display shows the area behind the vehicle. The rear area shown is divided by guide lines.

To switch off: on vehicles with a manual transmission, shift to neutral or a forward gear.

On vehicles with an automatic transmission, shift the selector lever to position P, N or D.

Side guide lines mbsymb6_inv_003a.png mark the vehicle width. They are used to align the vehicle with the edge of the road, e.g. the kerb.

The horizontal guide lines mark the following distances to the vehicle within the rear area:

mbsymb6_inv_003b.png

approximately 2.00 m clearance

mbsymb6_inv_003d.png

approximately 1.00 m clearance

mbsymb6_inv_003f.png

approximately 0.25 m clearance

The lower corners represent the corners of the rear bumper.

If you change the operating mode on COMAND when reverse gear is engaged, the camera image disappears. To display the rear area again, you must first shift to neutral N. If you then engage reverse gear again, the COMAND display shows the rear area again.
