Operating the climate control system

Switching the climate control on/off

Important information

If climate control is switched off, the air supply and air circulation are also switched off. Only use this setting for a brief period. Otherwise, the windows could mist up.

Activating/deactivating climate control via the control panel

Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock.

Vehicle with heating/air conditioning

To switch on: set airflow control mbsymb6_inv_003d.png clockwise to at least level 1 more.

To switch off: set airflow control mbsymb6_inv_003d.png anti-clockwise to the 0 position.

Vehicle with automatic climate control

To switch on: press the mbsymb1b_inv_004b.png button and set the blower speed to at least the first level.

The blower settings are shown in the display as a bar graph.

or

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00c3.png button.

The climate control is set to automatic mode more.

To switch off: press the mbsymb1b_inv_0049.png button and, after reaching the lowest blower speed, press it again.

Activating/deactivating rear-compartment climate control via the control panel

Turn the key to position 2 in the ignition lock.

Vehicle with rear-compartment heating/rear-compartment air conditioning

To switch on/off: press the mbsymb1b_inv_0069.png button on the control panel of the heating/air conditioning/automatic climate control.

If the indicator lamp in the button lights up or the mbsymb1b_inv_0069.png symbol appears in the automatic climate control display, the rear-compartment heating/air-conditioning system is switched on.

The rear-compartment heating display shows the mbsymb1b_inv_006a.png temperature setting and the mbsymb1b_inv_00f2.png blower speed as a bar display. When the blower is switched off, empty bar displays are shown.

The rear-compartment air-conditioning system display shows the mbsymb1b_inv_006a.png temperature setting numerically and the mbsymb1b_inv_00f2.png blower speed as a bar display. When the blower is switched off, the display shows 0.

Switching the cooling with air dehumidification function on/off

Important information

The cooling with air dehumidification function is only available when the engine is running. The air inside the vehicle is cooled and dehumidified according to the temperature selected.

Condensation may appear on the underside of the vehicle when in cooling mode. This is normal and not a sign that there is a malfunction.

If you switch off the "Cooling with air dehumidification" function, the air inside the vehicle will not be cooled (in warm weather) or dehumidified. Therefore, only switch off the "Cooling with air dehumidification" function briefly. Otherwise, the windows will mist up more quickly.

Switching on/off

Vehicle with air conditioning

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00bf.png button.

If the indicator lamp in the button lights up, cooling with air dehumidification is switched on.

Vehicle with automatic climate control

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00c1.png button.

When A/C appears in the display, cooling with air dehumidification is switched on.

Regulating climate control automatically

Important information

On vehicles with automatic climate control in automatic mode, the set temperature is automatically maintained at a constant level. The system automatically regulates the temperature of the dispensed air, the airflow and the air distribution.

Automatic mode will achieve optimal operation if cooling with air dehumidification is also activated. If desired, cooling with air dehumidification can be deactivated.

Switching on/off

If you deactivate automatic mode, the automatic climate control saves the current settings.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00c3.png button.

When the display control panel shows AUTO, automatic mode is switched on.

The recommended temperature setting for normal conditions is 22 corposwgl_2020.png . The automatic climate control will adjust the temperature to this setting as rapidly and as comfortably as possible. Only change the temperature in small increments.

Setting the temperature

Increasing/reducing temperature via the front control panel

Only change the temperature in small increments. Start at the centre position, or at 22 corposwgl_2020.png .

Switch on climate control more.

Vehicle with heating/air-conditioning system: turn temperature control mbsymb6_inv_003a.png for the heating or the air-conditioning system clockwise to increase the temperature, or anti-clockwise to reduce it more.

Vehicle with automatic air conditioning: press the mbsymb1b_inv_0073.png or mbsymb1b_inv_0072.png button more.

The control panel display indicates the set temperature.

If you set the temperature to above 28 corposwgl_2020.png , HI is shown in the display.

If you set the temperature to below 16 corposwgl_2020.png , LO is shown in the display.

When the automatic climate control is working at maximum cooling output, the display shows MAX COOL.

Increasing/reducing rear-compartment temperature via the rear-compartment control panel

Only change the temperature in small increments. Start at the centre position, or at 22 corposwgl_2020.png .

Switch on climate control more.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_0073.png or mbsymb1b_inv_0072.png button of the rear-compartment heating more or rear-compartment air-conditioning system mbsymb6_inv_003b.png more.

The control panel display indicates the set temperature as a number or as a mbsymb1b_inv_006a.png bar graph.

Setting the air distribution

Air distribution settings

The air distribution symbols have the following meanings:

Directs the airflow to the centre and side air vents[1].

Directs the airflow to the centre and side air vents[2].

Directs the airflow to the centre and side air vents and to the windscreen[1].

Vehicle with automatic climate control: after starting the engine in winter operation, the warm air will first be directed towards the windscreen. The windows are thus prevented from misting up. As the engine warms up, the quantity of warm air supplied to the footwell increases automatically.

Adjusting

Switch on climate control more.

Vehicle with heating/air conditioning: set air-distribution control mbsymb6_inv_003b.png to the corresponding symbol more, more.

Vehicle with automatic climate control: turn air-distribution control mbsymb6_inv_0042.png more.

The arrow in the display indicates the selected setting.

If you turn the air-distribution control while in automatic mode:

  • the AUTO symbol disappears from the control panel display.

  • automatic blower control remains switched on.

Setting the airflow

Switch on climate control more.

Vehicle with heating/air conditioning: set airflow control mbsymb6_inv_003d.png to the desired level more.

Vehicle with automatic climate control: press the mbsymb1b_inv_0049.png button to reduce or the mbsymb1b_inv_004b.png button to increase the airflow.

The blower settings are shown in the display as a bar graph.

If you press the airflow control button while in automatic mode:

  • the AUTO symbol disappears from the control panel display.

  • automatic air distribution remains switched on.

Vehicle with rear-compartment heating: press the mbsymb1b_inv_00f4.png button to reduce or the mbsymb1b_inv_00f3.png button to increase the airflow.

The display shows the blower speed as a bar display.

In heating mode, the air is automatically distributed in the footwells and in cooling mode in the roof area.

Vehicle with rear-compartment air conditioning: press the mbsymb1b_inv_00f5.png button to reduce or the mbsymb1b_inv_00f3.png button to increase the airflow.

The display shows the blower speed as a bar display.

In heating mode, the air is automatically distributed in the footwells and in cooling mode in the roof area.

or

Press and hold the mbsymb1b_inv_00f5.png button until the AUTO message no longer flashes in the control panel display.

The display shows AUTO and the airflow control settings are set automatically.

If, while in automatic mode, you press the mbsymb1b_inv_00f5.png or the mbsymb1b_inv_00f3.png button, automatic mode is deactivated again.

Defrosting the windows

You can use the "Demisting" function to defrost the windscreen or to demist the inside of the windscreen and the side windows.

Only use the following settings until the windows are clear again.

Switch on the rear window heating more.

Switch on climate control more.

Set temperature control mbsymb6_inv_003a.png to mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png more, more.

Set airflow control mbsymb6_inv_003d.png to mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png more, more.

Set air-distribution control mbsymb6_inv_003b.png to mbsymb1b_inv_0073.png mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png more, more.

Close the centre air vents more and the air outlets more for the headroom and the rear compartment.

Open the side air vents and direct them towards the side windows more.

Vehicle with automatic climate control

To switch on: close the air vent for the rear compartment and headroom more.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button repeatedly, until the display shows mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png.

The automatic climate control automatically switches to the following settings:

  • cooling with air dehumidification on

  • reheat function (air dehumidification) on

  • air-recirculation mode off

  • high airflow

  • high temperature

  • air distribution towards the windscreen and front side windows

To switch off: press the mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button repeatedly until the mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png symbol disappears.

The previous settings take effect again. Cooling with air dehumidification remains on.

or

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00c3.png button.

The mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png display message goes out and the display shows the AUTO display message. The automatic climate control regulates all the basic functions automatically.

Demisting the windows

Windows misted up on the inside

You should only select this setting until the windows are clear again.

Switch on the rear window heating more.

Switch on climate control more.

Switch off air-recirculation mode more.

Vehicle with heating

Set temperature control mbsymb6_inv_003a.png to a higher temperature more.

Set airflow control mbsymb6_inv_003d.png to a higher blower setting, e.g. to at least level two more.

Set air-distribution control mbsymb6_inv_003b.png to mbsymb1b_inv_0073.png mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png more.

If the windows still mist up, set the control as described for demisting more.

Vehicle with air conditioning

Activate cooling with air dehumidification more.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button more.

The reheat function is switched on. The indicator lamp in the switch lights up.

To switch off the reheat function, press the mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button again. The indicator lamp in the button goes out.

Vehicle with automatic climate control

Activate cooling with air dehumidification more.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button repeatedly until the mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png symbol is shown in the display more.

The reheat function is switched on.

To switch off the reheat function, press the mbsymb1b_inv_007a.png mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png button again. The mbsymb1b_inv_00a8.png symbol then disappears from the display.

If the windows mist up again, activate automatic mode more.

Windows misted up on the outside

You should only select this setting until the windscreen is clear again.

Switch on the windscreen wipers more.

Switch on climate control more.

Adjust air distribution to the footwell more.

Close the air vents more.

Rear window heating

The rear window heating consumes a lot of power. You should therefore switch it off as soon as the window is clear. The rear window heating otherwise switches off automatically after 12 minutes.

Start the engine.

To switch on/off: press the mbsymb1b_inv_007c.png switch.

The indicator lamp in the mbsymb1b_inv_007c.png switch comes on when the rear window heating is switched on.

If the indicator lamp in the mbsymb1b_inv_007c.png rear window heating button flashes, the on-board voltage is too low. The rear window heating has switched off prematurely or cannot be activated.

Switch off any consumers that are not required, e.g. reading lamps or interior lighting.

When the battery is sufficiently charged, the rear window heating can be activated again.

Activating/deactivating air-recirculation mode

Important safety notes

You can deactivate the intake of fresh air if unpleasant odours enter the vehicle from outside. Only the air inside the vehicle will then be circulated.

When you switch on air-recirculation mode, the side windows and windows could mist up more quickly, in particular at low outside temperatures. Only switch on air-recirculation mode for a short time.

Switching on/off

Air-recirculation mode switches off automatically after about 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the outside temperature.

The operation of air-recirculation mode is the same for all control panels.

Switch on climate control more.

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button.

If the indicator lamp in the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button lights up or the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png symbol appears in the automatic climate control display, the air-recirculation mode is switched on.

Convenience opening/closing using the air-recirculation button

WARNING

When the convenience closing feature is operating, parts of the body could become trapped in the closing area of the side window and the sliding sunroof. There is a risk of injury.

Observe the complete closing procedure when the convenience closing feature is operating. When closing make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area.

On vehicles with air conditioning/automatic climate control, you can press the air recirculation button to use the convenience opening/closing function.

Convenience closing feature: press and hold the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button for longer than 2 seconds.

Side windows and sliding sunroofs that are open close automatically. The indicator lamp in the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button goes out or the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png symbol goes out in the automatic climate control display. Air-recirculation mode is activated.

If there is a danger of being trapped:

Press the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button again.

If necessary, operate the switch to open the side window more or the sliding sunroof more.

Convenience opening feature: press and hold the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button for longer than 2 seconds.

The side windows and the sliding sunroofs move back to their original position. The indicator lamp in the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png button goes out or the mbsymb1b_inv_0065.png symbol goes out in the automatic climate control display. Air-recirculation mode is deactivated.

Activating/deactivating the residual heat function

Vehicles with automatic climate control: it is possible to make use of the residual heat of the engine to continue heating the stationary vehicle for up to 30 minutes after the engine has been switched off.

Turn the key to position 0 in the ignition lock or remove it.

Set the temperature, air distribution and air vents as required.

The blower operates at level 1 regardless of the airflow setting.

To switch on/off: press the mbsymb1b_inv_00c1.png switch.

When the automatic climate control display shows REST, the residual engine heat utilisation is switched on.

The residual heat function is switched off automatically:

  • after about 30 minutes

  • when you switch on the ignition

  • if the battery voltage drops

  • if the coolant temperature is too low.
